  1. Situation

 

 The narrative that I have chosen to share relates to the MOOC Rhizomatic Learning - the community is the curriculum, which was initiated by Dave Cormier, the scholar with whom the ideas around rhizomatic learning are most commonly assoiciated. The MOOC commenced January 14th 2014 and had, at the outset, a 6 week course schedule.However, as intimated in the title, there was some expectation that the course might continue and morph into a community of sorts.

Since I've been learning in networks and MOOCs, I've become increasingly interested in the idea of rhizomatic learning so as soon as I was made aware that Dave Cormier was organising this MOOC, I signed up. I was very keen to be part of this learning experience and to get to grips with the topic. Around 500 learners subscribed to the MOOC.

The course was offered on P2PU and consisted of questions, or challenges, posed by Dave in a weekly video post. There were no set readings. Learners had the facility to post their responses to the site discussion forum. However, there were also a number of social channels that had sprung up to support the course in which learners could post links to their blog post responses. I joined the Facebook group and the Google+ group. I also engaged with the course hashtag on Twitter.

 My goal(s) was to better understand the topic, to engage in discussion and to make connections with other learners. I suppose my overall goal was also to complete the course and blog about my learning each week.

  1. Reflection

 Such was the enthusiasm and expectancy for this course that it started to generate a lot of activity before the course 'officially' commenced, which meant that I was active in the social channels from a very early stage. When the course 'proper' started I continued to engage fully with the course and the question/challenge of the week. However, because I was subscribed to a host of sites and had all my filters open and set at maximum, things soon started to get a bit overwhelming. I was receiving alerts and notifications in abundance. The interaction that the course was generating was quiet intense. Despite originally being able to commit to full participation, in week 2 I fell victim to a number of external pressures and had to take the decision to switch off my filters and scale down my participation. I did not blog beyond week 2 and did not engage further with the course questions/challenges. However, I continued to interact in the Facebook group, but with reduced activity. Although the 'official' course has finished the community that sprang up out of the MOOC continues to interact via Facebook. I stil continue to follow activity and read posts, but I do not post or comment very much now. This is in large part because the Facebook group is set to open and I do not like the fact that anything I post in there is shared across my wider Facebook activity; I tolerated this during the timeframe of the course but am less inclined to do so long term.
